EXPERT GUIDE

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR FIRST HERMÈS BAG

A practical guide to choosing the right model, size, leather, colour and configuration, with the collector perspective in mind.

Choosing a first Hermès bag is rarely just about choosing a bag. The model, size, leather, colour and hardware can completely change how it feels to wear, how practical it is, and how it may be regarded over time.

For a first acquisition, the objective should not simply be to secure the rarest configuration or the one attracting the most attention. It should be to understand which Hermès bag genuinely works for you, while still making an informed decision about craftsmanship, collectability and long-term desirability.

START WITH THE BAG,

NOT THE HYPE.

The Birkin and Kelly naturally dominate the conversation around Hermès, but they are very different bags in use. Before thinking about colour, leather or rarity, the first decision is understanding which silhouette actually suits your lifestyle.

BIRKIN OR KELLY?

THE BIRKIN

The Birkin has the more relaxed character of the two. Its open construction, double handles and wider interior make it particularly practical for everyday use.

A Birkin 25 can feel compact and polished, while a 30 or 35 becomes considerably more functional. For a first acquisition, it is often the natural choice for someone who intends to use the bag frequently rather than reserve it for particular occasions.

THE KELLY

The Kelly is more architectural and inherently more formal. Its single top handle, defined closure and cleaner silhouette give it a very different presence.

Depending on the size, it can move easily between day and evening. The shoulder strap also adds a degree of versatility that the Birkin does not offer in the same way.

SIZE CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Size is one of the most underestimated decisions when choosing an Hermès bag. A few centimetres can completely change the way a bag sits on the body, what it carries, when it can be worn and, ultimately, how often it will actually be used.

Smaller sizes currently attract considerable collector attention, but the smallest bag is not automatically the best first bag. Proportion and practicality matter just as much as desirability.

BIRKIN

25
Compact, polished and highly sought after. Best suited to lighter everyday carry and clients who prefer a smaller silhouette.

30
For many clients, the sweet spot. Still elegant, but considerably more practical for everyday use.

35
More generous and relaxed. Particularly relevant for clients who carry more, travel often or simply prefer the presence of a larger bag.

A QUESTION OF PROPORTION

KELLY

20 (Mini Kelly)
An evening-scale bag with enormous collector appeal, but limited capacity. Beautiful, although not necessarily the most practical first Hermès.

25
Compact and refined while still usable during the day. One of the strongest all-round proportions.

28 / 32
Increasingly practical and particularly elegant on clients who prefer a more classical silhouette or need greater capacity.

THE SELECT FINDER VIEW

We often see clients initially request a particular size because it is the one most visible in the market. Once different proportions are handled in person, the preference can change very quickly.

Whenever possible, we prefer to compare bags physically rather than make a decision from measurements alone.
